They also use this day to remember friends and family who have died. In conclusion, Nirvana Day is not a festival that people would have parties for obvious reasons. Why would you have a party for someone’s death? Eid-ul-Adha is a Muslim festival. The festival remembers the prophet Ibrahims preparedness to sacrifice his son when God ordered him to. This festival is a public festival is Muslim countries. Muslims who can afford it. sacrifice a sheep or goat as a reminder of Ibrahims obedience to Allah. In Britain, the animal must be killed at a slaughterhouse. The share the meat of the animal. On this day, they will get dressed in their best clothes and go to the mosque to say prayers and thank Allah for all the blessings they have received. Furthermore, this festival you could see it has a happy festival because it is a sacrifice, or a sad festival because it is about when Ibrahim’s sacrifice his son because God told him to. Moreover, maybe some Muslims might have a party for his bravery and for sharing the meat. Or some Muslims might use this day as a reflection on the blessing they have received and their life.

Judicial System essays

Judicial System essays Women in this country have been a part of violence for an enormous amount of time. This violence includes pornography, rape, and even domestic violence. The United States judicial system has intervened into the so-called private sphere and eradicated women in society, providing precedent and even updating statutes as well as other types of legislation. Without intervention women may still have no rights as human beings and the victims of much worse violence. Not to say that the violence that comes about is not extremely painful and an obscene amount of torture for women, but without our judicial system to minimize some of these violent acts would be in total chausses. Throughout these acts of violence women are treated as animals, beaten, slaughtered, and killed eventually. For some, this may seem unthinkable and unrealistic but pornography, rape, and domestic violence does just this. These women who sell their bodies through porn usually-not all- have unusual childhood backgrounds. These backgrounds include, molestation, rape, incest, are penetrated with objects as children, sold for child porn by their parent or parents, being tortured through every moment of their lives. When these women grow up into adults what kind of life are they expected to have? A loving family, a college education, and a respectable profession? Or no education, broken family, and for them to fall into the same profession their parents taught them? These women dont understand that parents are supposed to love their children unconditionally. What else should we expect from women who all of their lives they have been treated as inhumane. Rape, also a sexually violent act that women encounter. This type of violence is non-consenual. Not one rape is alike. Rape consists of the domination over women so men can feel as if they are masculine and predominantly better than females who are actually physically weaker. The last act of violence discussed will be dome...

7 ways to avoid letting envy ruin your career growth

7 ways to avoid letting envy ruin your career growth Even though it’s ideal to always keep your eyes on your own career, we’re only human. It’s almost impossible not to look at your friends and colleagues to see where they are in their job, what they’ve done by a certain age, and how much they’re making compared to you. In fact, envy can be a very useful tool and motivator for personal and professional success, provided it comes in the appropriate doses and is put to the best possible use. But if you let it spiral out of its bounds, it can eat you alive- and even ruin your life. Here are a few tips you can follow to make sure you’re comparing yourself to others for the good of self-evaluation and motivation, rather than endless comparison that will only lead to anger or unhappiness about others’ successes.1. Check your reactions. When a close friend or colleague scores a lucky break or achieves something great, what is your reaction? Are you a seething green monster, or are you excited for them, no matter how motivated you are to accomplish great things yourself? And when something bad happens to someone, are you quietly doing a happy dance or are you truly sympathetic for their hardship? Hint: You want to feel good when good things happen to the good people in your life and bad when bad things happen to them. If your reactions are reversed, you have some work to do.2. Get off the Internet. There’s nothing worse for stoking spirals of negative emotion and envy than social media. If you can’t be trusted to use Facebook or Instagram without losing oodles of time and your own humanity, just suspend your accounts. Take a break or cut yourself off entirely- especially if you spend most of the time looking at your high school acquaintance’s successful lifestyle blog. It’s just not worth the risk to your soul.3. Only compete with yourself. If you’re comparing yourself constantly with others, restructure your focus. Instead, start comparing y our present self against your past. How much progress have you made? Enough? Too little? Are you actually killing it by this metric? Remember, you usually have no idea where anybody else began, and with what benefits. It’s no use playing a silent competition game that you can’t win.4. Become the best version of yourself. It is impossible to be authentic and yourself if you’re constantly looking outward. Instead, start caring more about your own personal development and less about how others see you, what they do, or what they are. Be original and authentic and get noticed for who you are, not who you envy.5. Focus on taking action to get what you want. You want the momentum that gets you chugging your way to the top? That requires focus, determination, and hard work- none of which you’re doing if you’re constantly in the hamster wheel of envying your co-workers and friends. You’re also compromising your ability to be an effective networker- al so a crucial piece to your success. Trust yourself enough to be able to sell your capabilities and capacities at the highest possible value, and trust everyone else to take care of themselves.6. Be empathetic.Try putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. That person whose successes have you blowing steam out of your ears is impressive and shiny on the outside, but might be harboring all sorts of hurts and challenges within. Try to see past the social media posts to the human underneath.7. Practice gratitude.Instead of coveting every little thing you don’t have, try being more grateful for what you do have: Your current job. Your current rung on the ladder. How far you’ve come. This doesn’t mean you can’t strive for more or better; it just means you shouldn’t dismiss what you’ve already earned.

Shakespeare and Taming of the Shrew Research Paper

Shakespeare and Taming of the Shrew - Research Paper Example During her reign, the British monarchy expanded to the rest of the world particularly in North America. The expansion to North America was made possible by voyages by people like Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake. Other accomplishments during her reign included the victory of play rights called Shakespeare over the Armada of Spain. Despite the fact that many accomplishments were attained during the reign of Queen Elizabeth that led to the emergence of Britain to be in the economic forefront, her reign was also full of assassinations. Some of the assassinations were genuine while others were made up so as to accuse the queen falsely (William, 67). Among the claims included whether or not she was virgin and the level of influence she received from her outhouse council. There are several factors that triggered Queen Elizabeth to marry. One of them was the small pox disease that she contracted in the year 1562 (Elizabeth, 2). This disease almost made her die. This disease piled a new fervor for her to get married. The powerful proceedings of parliament also had messages that the queen should get married so as to be in line with the traditions of the British. According to the British traditions, the queen needed to be married for several reasons including succession issues. These factors mounted pressure on her to get married. Further, debates were also geared to the person she would marry (Beem, 19). Most of the people of England were unsure whether the queen would marry a foreigner or a subject. This is because the person the queen was to marry had to handle issues of domestic and international stability and not just a matter of succession. Queen Elizabeth marriage was very important as she had witnessed marriage lessons from her sister Mary went through because of a hurried marriage to a Spanish King called Phillip II. Because of these factors, it forced a marriage petition to be raised by the House of Commons so that more pressure can make the queen to ma rry. These were attempts to caution Queen Elizabeth of the consequences that would result if she did not choose a husband with a lot of wisdom. The major fears of the people were civil war's miseries that could arise. However, House of Commons acknowledged that an alliance involving foreign powers being created through the institution of marriage was deemed to be advantageous. For instance, marrying Philip II could have helped British be more stable in matters of peace consultations with France (Guy, 15). Nonetheless, the issue of being subjected to the French foreign yoke was also foreseen. The best candidate that was considered to be the queen’s husband, Edward Courtenay had died abruptly leaving no suitable substitute to marry Queen Elizabeth. This left Queen Elizabeth with a hard task to solve. The queen had no option, but to devise a way she was going to barrage pressure of getting a husband to marry (Guy, 90). She exploited the masculine prejudice that existed around he r. In the process, Queen Elizabeth made a serious mistake by considering Levine. One reason is that the queen’s virtues were far much better than the person she had considered as her husband. Many people were amazed by her decisions. Bishop Quadra commented that the queen had many devils within her and it the devils that may have influenced her choice of Levine. The bluffing tactic of the queen made her attain

Employment law Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Employment law - Coursework Example In the case of Davis and his company management, the decision to dismiss may appear malicious but it was meant to protect the reputation of that institutions. However, if an employee has been found in contravention of the laws governing their employment, they still have rights to fair trial and access to a lawyer. A free and fair disciplinary committee hears and determines the case based on evidence gathered1. In the event an employee feels that they were unfairly treated, they can seek assistant from their trade unions or employment tribunals. Petitioners are encouraged to ensure they exhaust all possible avenues of justice before filing their cases at the tribunals2. The latter take a long period before the hearing and making any determination of the case. The following discussion focuses on a case involving dismissal of Dave from his work under some controversial circumstances. The main aim is establish if he is qualified for any remedies if the employment tribal rules on his beha lf. Statement of the case The case involves a Dave who was a manager at the Pamper. He had been in the company for a period of more than 11 years. His dismissal occurred on 26 May 2012 under certain controversial circumstances. He had entered a shop to purchase some goods when he saw his friend. He left the queue while still holding the items but let the till assistant know about it. It is at that time that the store detective, acting on the perception that he was a thief, decided to arrest him. His case was dismissed immediately for lack of sufficient evidence. However, his employers did not take the matter lightly and therefore decided to constitute a disciplinary committee. After gathering information from the store detective and Janice who was Dave’s assistant, they dismissed him. Anomalies in the determinations of the case From the analysis of the case, there were various legal anomalies. Firstly, Dave was denied the right to a fair trial. He was denied permission to be represented by his lawyer. This is against the Article 6 of the constitution, which requires defendants be represented by such legal experts3. In R (Seymour-Smith) v Secretary of State for Employment case, the judge ruled in favour of the plaintiff. The dismissal was unfair due to discrimination against the plaintiff. Dave was also discriminated and treated unfairly by being denied right to an attorney. This was unfair for him from a legal point of view because he appeared overwhelmed. All other members were against him including the disciplinary committee, which relied on biased information. Secondly, the evidence was gathered in a hurry and was not analyzed to ensure it was reliable. Some of the witnesses such as Janice is said to have had some disagreements with Dave several times. It is therefore possible that her testimony was biased and malicious. She might have wished Dave away so that she could take over his position. It appears that the employers were determined to dismiss Dave. They were only focused on information that supported the fact that he had purposed to steal. However, this is unrealistic since he had never done that before, and his status at his job did not allow him to behave that way. These gross anomalies should form a basis for seeking redress to the employment tribunal4. Dave, should be free to file his petition immediately with the employment tr

Sugar Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Sugar - Essay Example Purchasing for Sugar is not centralized. At the same time the present process of purchasing follows none of the established rules of purchasing for a chain of stores. In fact there is no standardized purchasing strategy. â€Å"Purchasing strategy includes long term agreement, product design collaboration, and seamless supply chain process between the trading partners.† (Ling Li, page 63)i. Purchasing at Sugar stores is not even scientifically decentralized as delegated purchasing at Sugar shops does not owe accountability to the management. A mixed sort of purchasing system is being followed wherein individuals take up purchasing responsibility on the basis of their experience and contacts in the market. With the result all those advantages of centralized purchasing like economies of scale and others, as discussed later part of this assignment, are not being attained. Costlier hybrid or mixed style of purchasing system is bound to shrink the turnover and profitability. Cash and Carry style of purchasing, adopted by Sugar stores, means branded apparel are not being sold at Sugar stores. Branded apparels are designed as per the prevalent market and fashion trends. In fact brands set the fashion trend in the market. There is always a scientific process involved in fabrication of branded apparels. Designers introduce styles that become craze during the coming session. These branded styles of garments are fabricated only for those business houses that care for fashion and styles. Increased sales automatically follow such brands. Charles W. Lamb and other (page 309)ii believe that â€Å"retailers love consumers’ increased acceptance of private brands.† The styles that attract sales are not available in whole sale stores from where Sugar stores are making purchases. Accordingly the purchasing approach of Sugar is rather negative. Management of Sugar is not interested in taking risks and that is why sales at such stores are a cause

Standardized testing Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Standardized testing - Research Paper Example The method of standardized testing is unbiased and this is arguably its biggest pro. It does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race or religion. The standardized method of testing works well in indentifying the needs of underperformers and those who are succeeding. Specific programs can be developed for underperformers to make them excel. It is a good method in order to achieve proficiency. It can also help create a more transparent education system. Being fair to each and every student is very important and standardized testing proves to be a very effective system when it comes to being fair to students. Standardized testing is considered to be an unfair system by many. This is because it does not take into account the differences in students and each and every student is judged using the same guidelines. This seems to be unfair and unjust. It is very important to consider the differences in each student. Not everyone can be a monkey and accomplish the daunting task of climbing trees. Assessment and education are two very important topics. Standardized testing is a good way of imparting education but when it comes to assessment it fails on more forefronts than one. Standardized testing has had a positive effect on many students. They have achieved great success academically because of this method. It is also a very reliable way of measuring the achievements of students. At the same time many consider this method to be highly flawed. â€Å"After No Child Left Behind (NCLB) passed in 2002, the US slipped from 18th in the world in math on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) to 31st place in 2009, with a similar drop in science and no change in reading.† (Walker, Tim) Standardized testing is unfair to non-English speakers and there is hardly any doubt about this statement.

Anti Social Personality Disorder Essay Example for Free

Anti Social Personality Disorder Essay Anti-social personality refers to a psychological disorder in which a person lacks the ability to feel emotions such as empathy, remorse, and guilt. These people are often referred to as psychopaths and are dangerous to society because of their violent nature and abilities to overlook what is usually perceived as â€Å"wrong† or â€Å"immoral†. Genetics vs. the Environment. This disorder can come from the conditions of one’s home environment or someone can be genetically predisposed to develop symptoms when crossing with an environmental trigger. Either way, this disorder develops with a combination of physical, genetic, and environmental factors (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2015). Many studies have been done to help determine if children at risk for Anti-social personality disorder are more likely to develop symptoms in an adoptive environment or if that environment would protect them from developing it. Researchers have concluded that the adoptive family environment combined with the biological risks make anti-social personality disorder prevalent in adoptees (Haimowitz, 2011). In other words, it takes a combination of factors to create this particular type of monster. Environment. Criminologist Nathalie Fontaine of Indiana University studies the tendency toward being callous or unemotional- signs of anti-social personality disorder- in children between 7 and 12 years old. Her research showed that these traits aren’t fixed, and can change in children as they grow. So, if psychologists identify children with these risk factors early on, it may not be too late (Moskowitz, 2011). This study supports the idea that, although a person might hold the physical or genetic predisposed factors to develop this disorder, it takes an environmental trigger for the patient to actually begin showing symptoms. Environmental triggers for the disorder could be anything from the death of a loved one during childhood to a violently abusive parent. People diagnosed with Anti-social personality disorder typically have criminal behavior in their lives either from a parent, role model, or having a criminal record themselves. One long-term  study followed 1,795 children from ages 3-23, testing aspects of their growth and development. 137 of these children became criminal offenders by the age of 23. Among the tests that were done on the participants, one measured their responses to fear by associating a stimulus-noise or object- with a punishment such as an electric sh ock or loud sound. After measuring these children’s involuntary reactions through the skin, researchers found a significant lack of fear in the 137 children that became criminals later in life compared to the other 1,568 participants (American Journal of Psychiatry, 2010). Most people are aware of the Little Albert experiment conducted by behaviorist John Watson in 1920. Watson studied a child-Little Albert- by placing him in a room and exposing him to various stimuli including a white rat, white rabbit, and a monkey. The child of course showed joy when being around the cute fluffy animals; the first time. Watson then let the rat back in to the room and this time, when Albert touched he rat, Watson banged a hammer on a metal pipe, making a loud noise and causing the baby to cry. He did this server more times until the child began crying at the sight of the rat, exhibiting fear of the creature itself because he had then associated the loud, scary sound with the rat. This is the way you would expect a child to react, seeing how its human nature. Well, in psychopathic nature, it is more likely that the patient would still relate the noise to the stimuli, but instead would attempt to free themselves of the noise by doing what seems most logical- getting ri d of the rat. This is why children that come from an abusive home are more likely to develop personality disorders than the average child- they relate the abusive behavior to the abuser and instead of exhibiting fear, they seek revenge and closure. Most serial killers have a specific type of victim and this is because their victims are similar to their original abuser and killing them gives temporary satisfaction; but it wears off so they need to seek more, like a drug. The environment in which a child is raised can greatly influence the kind of person the child grows into and what they are able to justify based on what they were exposed to in their childhood. Genetics. In 1998, 8,045 twins were tested using a questionnaire about personality traits common in disorders like antisocial personality. Researchers found that 2/3 of the variations in traits common in personality disorders are explained by genes (Masui, 2011). The character traits and temperament relating to  anti-social personality dis order- violence, narcissism, ignorance, can all be passed down from a parent and the existence of such traits do not imply the development of disorder. The development might begin, however, if the parent acts in these ways toward their child, giving them an environmental trigger. Physical Differences. In one recent study, scientists compares 27 people with severe antisocial personality disorder- psychopaths- with 32 non-psychopaths. In the psychopaths, the researchers observed deformations in another part of the brain called the amygdala- the seat for human emotion- and found that the psychopaths showed a thinning of the outer layer of that region of the brain and an 18 percent reduction in volume compared to that of the average human inability to learn from reward and punishment and also have little response to stress. In Japan, a study was done to support the idea that psychopaths do not respond to reward and punishment, showing a difference in the prefrontal cortex- judgment and panning portion of the brain- in psychopaths compared to the average human brain. In this study, 145 University students in Japan took the 26 question Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale test where they were asked to rate their level of agreement on statements relating to their lives. The 20 students who scored the highest on the test were put in a group labeled as the â€Å"high psychopathy group† (variable) while the 20 who scored the lowest on the test were placed in the â€Å"low psychopathy group† (Control). When presented with various tasks and given reward for one and punishment for another, the researchers found the highly psychopathic showed no change in the proficiency with which the tasks were completed, whether they were offered reward for doing well or threatened with punishment for doing poorly. On the other hand, the control group showed a faster accomplishment rate with the tasks when promised a reward. This study goes to show that people with anti-social personality disorder lack the section of their brain that tells them to respond to incentive. As the aforementioned information supports, I am able to conclude that the three main factors of anti-social personality disorder- Environmental, Genetic, and Physical differences- are all needed for the disorder to develop and grow to its full destructive quality. A Modest Proposal | An Analysis

A Modest Proposal | An Analysis Introduction: One of the Tory writers, a talented satirist (Abjadian 87), Jonathan Swift was born on November 30, 1667, in Dublin, Ireland. His father-an Englishman who had moved to Ireland-died earlier that year. Receiving financial assistance from relatives, Swift attended a good school for his basic education and graduated from Trinity College in Dublin in 1686. He lived off and on in England, became an Anglican clergyman, and eventually was appointed dean of St. Patricks Cathedral in Dublin, although he had lobbied for a position in England. His writing-especially his satires-made him one of the most prominent citizens in Great Britain, and he worked for a time on behalf of Tory causes. His most famous work is Gullivers Travels, a book of satire on politics and society in general. Despite health issues, Swift continued to write prolifically-especially on issues concerning Anglo-Irish relations and the church. He decried what he viewed as Englands oppression of Ireland in A Modest Proposal' (de Gategno and Stubblefield 8) Swift died in Dublin on October 19, 1745. A Modest Proposal: For Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick, commonly named as A Modest Proposal, is a Juvenalian satirical essay written and published anonymously by Jonathan Swift in 1729. The essay was originally printed in the form of a pamphlet. At the time of its publication, 1729, a pamphlet was a short work that took a stand on a political, religious, or social issue-or any other issue of public interest. A typical pamphlet had no binding, although it sometimes had a paper cover. Writers of pamphlets, called pamphleteers, played a significant role in inflaming or resolving many of the great controversies in Europe in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, as well as in the political debate leading up to the American Revolution. In addition to A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift wrote many political pamphlets supporting the causes of the Tory political party after he renounced his allegiance to the Whig party. Satire A Modest Proposal is an essay that uses satire to make its point. A satire is a literary work that attacks or pokes fun at vices, abuses, stupidity, and/or any other fault or imperfection. In Abjadians words, satire is often considered as a corrective means of human vice and folly (11). Satire may make the reader laugh at, or feel disgust for, the person or thing satirized. Impishly or sardonically, it criticizes someone or something, using wit and clever wording-and sometimes makes outrageous assertions or claims. The main purpose of a satire is to spur readers to remedy the problem under discussion. The main weapon of the satirist is verbal irony, a figure of speech in which words are used to ridicule a person or thing by conveying a meaning that is the opposite of what the words say. Readers unacquainted with its reputation as a satirical work often do not immediately realize that Swift was not seriously proposing cannibalism and infanticide, nor would readers unfamiliar with the satires of Horace and Juvenal-the two distinguished Roman satirists (Abjadian 13)-recognize that Swifts essay follows the rules and structure of Latin satires. The fine satiric strategy in A Modest Proposal (Williams 26) is often only understood after the reader notes the allusions made by Swift to the attitudes of landlords, such as the following: I grant this food may be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for Landlords, who as they have already devoured most of the Parents, seem to have the best Title to the Children (Swift 1080). Swift extends the metaphor to get in a few jibes at Englands mistreatment of Ireland, noting that For this kind of commodity will not bear exportation, and flesh being of too tender a consistence, to admit a long continuance in salt, although perhaps I could name a country, which would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it (1084). Historical Background Over the centuries, England gradually gained a foothold in Ireland. In 1541, the parliament in Dublin recognized Englands Henry VIII, a Protestant, as King of Ireland. In spite of repeated uprisings by Irish Catholics, English Protestants acquired more and more estates in Ireland. By 1703, they owned all but ten percent of the land. Meanwhile, legislation was enacted that severely limited the rights of the Irish to hold government office, purchase real estate, get an education, and advance themselves in other ways. As a result, many Irish fled to foreign lands, including America. Most of those who remained in Ireland lived in poverty, facing disease, starvation, and prejudice. It was this Ireland-an Ireland of the tyrannized and the downtrodden-that Jonathan Swift attempted to focus attention on in A Modest Proposal in 1720. Tertullians Apology Some scholars have argued that A Modest Proposal was largely influenced and inspired by Tertullians Apology. While Tertullians Apology is a satirical attack against early Roman persecution of Christianity, Swifts A Modest Proposal addresses the Anglo-Irish situation in the 1720s. James William Johnson believes that Swift saw major similarities between the two situations (563). Johnson notes Swifts obvious affinity for Tertullian and the bold stylistic and structural similarities between the works A Modest Proposal and Apology (562). In structure, Johnson points out the same central theme; that of cannibalism and the eating of babies; and the same final argument; that human depravity is such that men will attempt to justify their own cruelty by accusing their victims of being lower than human (563). Stylistically, Swift and Tertullian share the same command of sarcasm and language. In agreement with Johnson, Donald C. Baker points out the similarity between both authors tones and use of irony. Baker notes the uncanny way that both authors imply an ironic justification by ownership over the subject of sacrificing children-Tertullian while attacking pagan parents, and Swift while attacking the English mistreatment of the Irish poor (219). Purpose of the Proposal Swift appears to suggest in his essay that the impoverished Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling children as food for rich gentlemen and ladies. By doing this he mocks the authority of the British officials. This is when Britain had taken over Ireland and put heavy restrictions on their trade, stifling their economy. The essay has been noted by historians as being the first documented satirical essay. A critic (qtd. in Williams) in Journal Anglais, in 1777 states, To ridicule those schemes for reform with which the public was inundated at that time, and which often insulted the misery to which they affected a desire to bring consolation. It will be noticed that Swift has imitated the common expressions and the insinuating tone of the authors of these projects (199). He wrote A Modest Proposal to call attention to abuses inflicted on Irish Catholics by well-to-do English Protestants. Swift himself was a Protestant, but he was also a native of Ireland, having been born in Dublin of English parents. He believed England was exploiting and oppressing Ireland. Many Irishmen worked farms owned by Englishmen who charged high rents-so high that the Irish were frequently unable to pay them. Consequently, many Irish farming families continually lived on the edge of starvation. In A Modest Proposal, Swift satirizes the English landlords with outrageous humor, proposing that Irish infants be sold as food at age one, when they are plump and healthy, to give the Irish a new source of income and the English a new food product to bolster their economy and eliminate a social problem. He says his proposal, if adopted, would also result in a reduction in the number of Catholics in Ireland, since most Irish infants-almost all of whom were baptized Catholic-would end up in stews and other dishes instead of growing up to go to Catholic churches. Here, he is satirizing the prejudice of Protestants toward Catholics. Swift also satirizes the Irish themselves in his essay, for too many of them had accepted abuse stoically rather than taking action on their own behalf. Style: Regarding the style used in the essay, William Monck Mason states, The cold, phlegmatic style [in A Modest Proposal] of a political projector, who waves the consideration of all the finer feelings of humanity, or makes them subservient, as matters of slight moment, to the general advantages proposed in his plan of financial improvement, is admirably well satirizedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦. The cool, businesslike manner, in which the calculations are stated, is equally admirable (340). Format ..In A Modest Proposal, Swift uses a standard essay format: an opening that presents the topic and thesis (the modest proposal), a body that develops the thesis with details, and a conclusion. In the opening, the author states the problem: the deplorable economic and social conditions that impoverish the Irish and prevent them from providing adequate care for their children. Before presenting the thesis, he inserts the following transitional sentence: I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection (Swift 1080) He follows this sentence with the thesis, and then presents the details in the body of the essay. In the conclusion, he states the benefits that would accrue from his proposal. He begins with the following two sentences: I have too long digressed, and therefore shall return to my subject. I think the advantages by the proposal which I have made are obvious and many, as well as of the highest importance. He next lists the advantages, using transitional words such as secondly and thirdly to move from one point to the next. He ends the conclusion by explaining why his proposal is superior to other remedies. Keep in mind that throughout the body and conclusion Swift makes his argument with irony, stating the opposite of what he really means. Irony The dominant figure of speech in A Modest Proposal is verbal irony, in which a writer or speaker says the opposite of what he means. Swifts masterly use of this device makes his main argument-that the Irish deserve better treatment from the English-powerful and dreadfully amusing. For example, to point out that the Irish should not be treated like animals, Swift compares them to animals, as in this example: I rather recommend buying the children alive, and dressing them hot from the knife, as we do roasting pigs. Also, to point out that disease, famine, and substandard living conditions threaten to kill great numbers of Irish, Swift cheers their predicament as a positive development: Some persons of a desponding spirit are in great concern about that vast number of poor people, who are aged, diseased, or maimed, and I have been desired to employ my thoughts what course may be taken to ease the nation of so grievous an encumbrance. But I am not in the least pain upon that matter, because it is very well known that they are every day dying and rotting by cold and famine, and filth and vermin, as fast as can be reasonably expected. And as to the young laborers, they are now in as hopeful a condition; they cannot get work, and consequently pine away for want of nourishment, to a degree that if at any time they are accidentally hired to common labor, they have not strength to perform it; and thus the country and themselves are happily delivered from the evils to come (1082). In Sarcasm and Irony in Jonathan Swifts A Modest Proposal, a critic, regarding the irony in the essays, maintains, One of the voices that is present throughout the story is that of irony. The story itself is ironic since no one can take Swifts proposal seriously. This irony is clearly demonstrated at the end of the story; Swift makes it clear that this proposal would not affect him since his children were grown and his wife unable to have any more children. It would be rather absurd to think that a rational man would want to both propose this and partake in the eating of another human being. Therefore, before an analyzation can continue, one has to make the assumption that this is strictly a fictional work and Swift had no intention of pursuing his proposal any further. Allusions There are some allusions in the essay including Barbadoes (Barbados): Easternmost West Indies island, settled by the British in 1627. When Swift published A Modest Proposal in 1729, the islands plantation owners used slaves to produce sugar for European consumption; Dublin: The Irish city mentioned in A Modest Proposal. It is the capital of Ireland; Formosa: Portuguese name for Taiwan, a Chinese-inhabited island off the southeast coast of China; Mandarin: High-ranking Chinese official; Papist: Roman Catholic; Pretender: James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766), son of King James II, who ruled England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1685 to 1688. James II was a Catholic, as was his wife, Mary of Modena. After his accession to power, Protestant factions continually maneuvered against him in the background. When Mary became pregnant, these factions worried that the birth of her child would establish a line of Catholic kings. Consequently, they plotted to oust James II and replace him with Du tchman William of Orange, whose mother was the daughter of an English king, Charles I, and whose wife was one of James IIs own daughters. When William marched against England, many Protestants in James IIs army deserted to William, and James had no choice but to flee to France. After he died in 1701, the French king then proclaimed James IIs young son, James Francis Edward Stuart, to be the rightful king of England. The English Parliament then enacted laws designed to prevent seating another Catholic king. Nevertheless, in succeeding years, James Francis repeatedly attempted to regain the throne, and the British eventually nicknamed him the Old Pretender. Psalmanazar, George: French forger and impostor who traveled widely under different personas. In one of his most famous schemes, he pretended to be from Formosa (present-day Taiwan), of which little was known in the Europe of his time. In London, he published a book about Formosa in which he wrote that Formosan law permitted a husb and to eat a wife if she committed adultery. Psalmanazar had never visited Formosa; the whole book was made up. Nevertheless, many Englishmen believed what he had written. Themes: There some themes explained and referred to in the essay. The themes like the exploitation of the downtrodden. Beneath Swifts audacious satire is a serious theme; that English overlords are shamelessly exploiting and oppressing the impoverished people of Ireland through unfair laws, high rents charged by absentee landlords, and other injustices. Another theme is the prejudice: At the time of the publication of A Modest Proposal, many British Protestants disdained Roman Catholics-especially Irish Catholics-and enacted laws limiting their ability to thrive and prosper. One important theme of the work is the Irish Inaction; Swifts satirical language also chides the Irish themselves for not acting with firm resolve to improve their lot. Another theme is, as Barnett refers to, the theme of unwelcome reproduction are the wretchedly poor mothers of Ireland in A Modest Proposal, whose children, as the subtitle informs us, are a Burden to their Parents or Country' (121). Population It has been argued that Swifts main target in A Modest Proposal was not the conditions in Ireland, but rather the can-do spirit of the times that led people to devise a number of illogical schemes that would purportedly solve social and economic ills. Swift was especially insulted by projects that tried to fix population and labor issues with a simple cure-all solution. A memorable example of these sorts of schemes involved the idea of running the poor through a joint-stock company (Wittkowsky 85). In response, Swifts Modest Proposal was a burlesque of projects concerning the poor (88) that were in vogue during the early 18th century. A Modest Proposal also targets the calculating way people perceived the poor in designing their projects. The pamphlet targets reformers who regard people as commodities (Wittkowsky 101). In the piece, Swift adopts the technique of a political arithmetician (95) to show the utter ridiculousness of trying to prove any proposal with dispassionate statistics. Critics differ about Swifts intentions in using this faux-mathematical philosophy. Edmund Wilson argues that statistically the logic of the Modest proposal can be compared with defense of crime (arrogated to Marx) in which he argues that crime takes care of the superfluous population(Wittkowsky 95). Wittkowsky counters that Swifts satiric use of statistical analysis is an effort to enhance his satire that springs from a spirit of bitter mockery, not from the delight in calculations for their own sake (98). Economy Robert Phiddians article Have you eaten yet? The Reader in A Modest Proposal focuses on two aspects of A Modest Proposal: the voice of Swift and the voice of the Proposer. Phiddian stresses that a reader of the pamphlet must learn to distinguish between the satiric voice of Jonathan Swift and the apparent economic projections of the Proposer. He reminds readers that there is a gap between the narrators meaning and the texts, and that a moral-political argument is being carried out by means of parody (Phiddians 6). While Swifts proposal is obviously not a serious economic proposal, George Wittkowsky, author of Swifts Modest Proposal: The Biography of an Early Georgian Pamphlet, argues that it in order to fully understand the piece, it is important to understand the economics of Swifts time. Wittowsky argues that not enough critics have taken the time to directly focus on the mercantilism and theories of labor in 18th century England. [I]f one regards the Modest Proposal simply as a criticism of condition, about all one can say is that conditions were bad and that Swifts irony brilliantly underscored this fact (Phiddians 3). At the start of a new industrial age in the 18th century, it was believed that people are the riches of the nation, and there was a general faith in an economy which paid its workers low wages because high wages would mean workers would work less (4). Furthermore, in the mercantilist view no child was too young to go into industry. In those times, the somewhat more humane at titudes of an earlier day had all but disappeared and the laborer had come to be regarded as a commodity (6). People are the riches of a nation Louis A. Landa presents Swifts A Modest Proposal as a critique of the popular and unjustified maxim of mercantilism in the eighteenth century that people are the riches of a nation (161). Swift presents the dire state of Ireland and shows that mere population itself, in Irelands case, did not always mean greater wealth and economy (165). The uncontrolled maxim fails to take into account that a person that does not produce in an economic or political way makes a country poorer, not richer (165). Swift also recognizes the implications of such a fact in making mercantilist philosophy a paradox: the wealth of a country is based on the poverty of the majority of its citizens (165). Swift however, Landa argues, is not merely criticizing economic maxims but also addressing the fact that England was denying Irish citizens their natural rights and dehumanizing them by viewing them as a mere commodity (165). Rhetoric Charles K. Smith argues that Swifts rhetorical style persuades the reader to detest the speaker and pity the Irish. Swifts specific strategy is twofold, using a trap to create sympathy for the Irish and a dislike of the narrator who, in the span of one sentence, details vividly and with rhetorical emphasis the grinding poverty but feels emotion solely for members of his own class. Swifts use of gripping details of poverty and his narrators cool approach towards them creates two opposing points of view which alienate the reader, perhaps unconsciously, from a narrator who can view with melancholy detachment a subject that Swift has directed us, rhetorically, to see in a much less detached way (Smith 136). Conclusion: A Modest Proposal, A (1729), a pamphlet by Jonathan Swift on Ireland, written during the summer of 1729. In form and tone it resembles a conventional philanthropic appeal to solve Irelands economic crisis, but Swifts anonymous speaker suggests a barbarous plan, to cannibalize the nations children. It is a masterpiece of rhetorical irony, a disturbing fiction which marks the end of Swifts pamphleteering role on national affairs after a decade of passionate involvement. The essay depicts the horrific conditions of Ireland and the lives of the Irish people in 1729. The author portrays and attacks the cruel and unjust oppression of Ireland by its oppressor, the mighty English and ridicules the Irish people at the same time. However, Swifts opposition is indirectly presented. Jonathan Swift is able to do so by using the persona, irony, and wit in order to expose the remarkable corruption and degradation of the Irish people, and at the same time present them with practicable solutions to their unscrupulous and pathetic lives. The author uses a satire to accomplish his objective not only because he is able to conceal his true identity but also because it is the most effective way to awake the people of Ireland into seeing their own depravity. Swift creates a fictional persona because by hiding his true identity he is able to convince the readers of the significance of Irelands problem and allow them to see truth and reality. The persona is a concerned Irishman who is very intelligent, sound, and serious. He appears to be a brute and a monster for proposing something evil and immoral very calmly as if it is normal to consume the flesh of another human being. What makes his proposal to be even more depraved is that he proposes to eat the babies. The persona declares, and at exactly at one year old that I propose to provide for them, in a such a manner as, instead of being a charge upon their parents, or the parish, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall, on the contrary, contribute to the feeding and partly to the clothing of many thousands. The persona justifies his proposal with numerous reasons. Besides the prevention of voluntary abortions and infanticide, it will also prevent the loss of money for maintenance of children and the abuse of women and children. The number of Papists would be reduced and the children will not become beggars, thieves, or prostitutes. The proposal will aid in the increase in the status of the peasantry, promote love, and care from the mothers towards their children. However the persona alone is inadequate to make the narrator seem too plausible. The persona must utilize irony and wit in order for his essay to be more efficacious. In fact, according to deGategno and Stubblefield, it is the kind of callous indifference toward children that Swift parodied and criticized in A Modest Proposal (69). A Modest Proposal is so effective and appealing because of the authors copious uses of irony throughout his essay. The title itself is definitely ironic. It provides the reader with false expectations of decency and sensibility on the part of the writer. The butchery of innocent babies and the use of their skin for clothing is way beyond being modest. It is brutal and insane. The proposal is intended to shock and throw the reader off balance. The narrator also ridicules the Irish. Swift impelled and inspired the Irish into rebelling by presenting them with feasible solutions to cease the anguish of Irelands people.

Independence and the Development of the American Identity and Mathemati

During the 1800s, we find the theme of independence, or freedom from outside constraints, in the development of two different frontiers. We find it in the American West through Manifest Destiny, freedom from caste, and in the chance that homesteaders had to acquire virtually free land. We find independence in math through in the building of stronger theoretical foundations, non-Euclidean geometries, and Cantor's infinities. Independence involves breaking from the commonly accepted, traditional views in order to explore the new. It is not necessarily individual people working alone. We can see independence in a community of thought as well as in the work of a single person. Independence is an important part of the Western culture as a concept. We find this in the concept of Manifest Destiny. This concept began when the Puritan immigrants "interpreted their victories over the Indians as part of God's plan." (Hine, 65) O'Sullivan first defined this term. He "coined one of the most famous phrases in American history when he insisted on 'our manifest destiny to overspread the continent.'"(Hine 199) Although Manifest Destiny meant different things to different people, the general definition was that God ordained the United States should expand to cover some undefined area. (Merk p.24) Some thought that the United States should cover the entire continent, and perhaps even South America, but others were more conservative in their views. Manifest Destiny was exemplified by the politicians. Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois declared that he "would blot out the lines on the map which now marked our national boundaries . . .and make the area of liberty as broad as th e continent itself." (Hine 199) The concept of Manifest Destiny is a... ...eings perceive the world. My Generation Essay -- essays research papers

My Generation   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Every group receives a name, whether it is a club or organization, plants, animals or people. No matter what it is, it will receive a label so that it can be referred to easily. For instance, those born between the years 1977 and 1997 were given the title of the â€Å"Digital Generation.† This label was attained because of the widespread technology that is available to them from birth. The â€Å"Digital Generation† is not only about the Internet and technology, but is also about high values, a strong belief in self-expression and spirituality.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The values of past generations have been very self-centered. Yet â€Å"Generation D†, as it is called, believes in equal rights for all and a strong connection with family and friends. Yet they are so materialistic that the older generations see them as â€Å"floozies with credit cards.† This is one of the reasons why there are so many equal rights activists today. Never before has there been such a range of reasons to stand up for ones right. For instance, there are so many organizations to stop violence against people; race, creed, sexuality, gender, nationality, etc., are irrelevant. Today’s youth is acquainted with many different people, but they only share close connections with a select few. A person of this generation will know many people and be friendly with them, however the personally association is only present with the people that have been known for an extended period...

Girl with a Pearl Earring Essay

In the novel Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier, Griet faces many challenges which causes her identity to change. Though Griet starts out as an innocent maid who has to follow orders, she starts developing her own opinion and the ability to make decisions. Griet changes from an household servant to having the courage to share her opinion to a mature lady, capable of making her own decisions. Many factors contribute to the change in Griet’s identity, but the main factor is Vermeer, her master. At first, Griet is viewed as an innocent girl, who is compelled to work as an maid due to her father’s incapability to provide for her family. She does not want to leave her family and go to an unknown place, but she has to; in order to fulfill her family’s needs’. This is evident when Griet says to her sister, Agnes, â€Å" ‘You know I don’t want to leave. I have to’†(7). When she arrives at the Vermeer household, she is viewed as a helper with the household chores, and a girl who must follow her master’s orders’. Later on, she starts to consider the Vermeer household as her own family. ’I have two families now, and they must not mix’†(53). This quote demonstrates the fact that Griet is adapting to her environment, and that she has started considering them as her family. This illustrates a change in her identity, as she has changed from a compelled and scared young girl to a maid, capable of adapting to a new environment. Throughout the course of the novel, Griet starts developing her own opinion along with the courage to speak her opinion. At first, she just went along with what she was told: â€Å" ‘But he was my master. I was meant to so as he said’†(57). This demonstrates the fact that Griet completes tasks without thinking. Even if she wants to say something, she doesn’t, because she gives her opinion no importance. Griet always had the ability to recognize Vermeer’s paintings’ strengths and weaknesses, but she didn’t have the courage to say it. This changes, due to Vermeer, who forces Griet to give her opinion. â€Å" ‘It is a better painting now’†(64). This supports Griet’s change in identity, form being too scared to speaking her mind to having the courage to give her opinion to her master. Near the end, Griet’s identity has gone through the process of a young maid to a mature lady. At first, Griet’s opinion held no importance. She does not have a say in anything. This is evident when she says, â€Å" ‘ What would I think, madam? ’†(157). Griet has certainly developed an opinion, but not the courage to speak it in front of others. She is aware of her status as a maid. This changes throughout the course of the novel. Griet does develop the courage to take the decision of her life as well as carry it out. â€Å" ‘I did not pick up the knife. I turned and walked from the room’†(215). This quote illustrates Griet’s ability to make and carry out decisions. She is not going to tolerate any wrong accusations, and she has learned to take a stand for herself. This change occurs due to Vermeer and his art. Somewhere in between, Griet realizes that she has had enough, and she’s not going to let anyone come and accuse her of doing something she didn’t do. Vermeer and his paintings made Griet feel that she does hold importance, and no one has the right to accuse her wrongfully. Therefore, Griet’s identity undergoes a lot of changes throughout the novel. First, she is maid who is duty- bound to work in an unknown place due to her family’s needs’. As the book continues, she starts developing her opinion as well as the ability to say it. In the end, she is a mature lady with the capability to decide for herself. All of the changes are due to Vermeer. He was the one who accepted her and allowed her to give her opinion, and he was also the one who rejected her by silently standing there while Griet was being wrongfully accused.

Deprived of education Essay

From a very early age I have cherished a desire to work for the betterment of children. I hail from Iran and in my life I have witnessed many instances where children are deprived of education and even necessary means of sustenance. Most of these children do not get any emotional support while they are forced to lead a challenging life amidst a harsh social environment. Within my home country social organizations lack sufficient power so they are unable to make much difference to the lives of those children who have been adversely affected by some unprecedented events. Not many opportunities exist in Iran for some one who is dedicated to making child care a career so I have come to the U. S. A in order to gain academic skills that can be applied to the betterment of children, whilst I am pursuing my studies I intend to gain some practical hands on experience in various fields related to child care and child development. I possess some prior work experiences which have some commonalities to the internship programme of the Family Stress Centre. I have worked as student assistant at Santa Monica University. Amongst the various responsibilities that were given to me I was assigned a task which required me to help children learn with the aid of computer software. I am presently working at preschool as a an assistant teacher, at the preschool I have worked with children in the age group of 3 to 5 years, I have also worked with disabled children. I have been working at the preschool since January 2008. My superiors at my present and previous organizations have approved of my work. I am fully committed to constantly improving my performance at work and I ensure that any work that is delegated to me is completed to the satisfaction of the clients and my superiors. I have graduated from Santa Monica College; at college I have done courses such as Child Development Professional, Family and Consumer Studies, Play and Human Potential, Music and literature for children etc. I have found that these courses had enormous practical implication and I have successfully applied my theoretical knowledge in my work. The Family Stress Centre will offer me opportunities to acquire new skills and enable me to practice the theoretical skills that I have acquired as a part of my Child Development Professional course at CSUN. I already possess people skills that are necessary for a position such as this. Additionally I have prior experience of worked with children I have also worked with physically challenged children. Since Family Stress Centre offers counseling services my experience as an assistant teacher will help me to quickly acquire counseling skills.. I am confident of the fact that if selected for the internship I will work with dedication and commitment because I have dedicated my life for the betterment of children.

How To Use Angular Quotation Marks in Spanish

How To Use Angular Quotation Marks in Spanish Spanish sometimes uses angular quotation marks ( « and  ») - often known as chevrons or guillemets or comillas franceses  and comillas angulares in Spanish - interchangeably with and in the same way as regular double quotation marks. In general, they are used much more in Spain than in Latin America, possibly because guillemets are commonly used in various non-English European languages such as French. In all Spanish, however, quote marks of either the angular or regular variety are used much as they are in English, most often to quote from someones speech or writing or to call attention to words that are given a special or ironic use. The Difference in Punctuation The main difference between Spanish usage and that of American English is that added commas and periods in Spanish go outside the quotation marks, while in American English they go inside the quotation marks. A pair of examples shows how these marks are used: Ninguna mente extraordinaria est exenta de un toque de demencia, dijo Aristà ³teles. /  «Ninguna mente extraordinaria est exenta de un toque de demencia », dijo Aristà ³teles.No extraordinary mind is free of a touch of insanity, Aristotle said.Tengo una hija. Tiene cuatro patas y maulla. / Tengo una  «hija ». Tiene cuatro patas y maulla.I have one daughter. She has four legs and meows. If you have a quotation within the words that are enclosed by angular quote marks, use the standard double quotation marks:  «Ãƒâ€°l me dijo, Estoy muy feliz ». He told me, I am very happy. Long (Em) Dashes and Paragraph Spacing Keep in mind that it is common when printing dialogue in Spanish to dispense with quote marks entirely and use a long dash (- ), sometimes known as an em dash or raya in Spanish, to indicate the beginning and end of the quotation or a change in speaker. It isnt necessary - although its often done - to start a new paragraph for a change of speaker, as is usually done in English. No dash is needed at the end of a quotation if it is at the end of a paragraph. Different usages are illustrated in the following three example pairs: -  ¡Cuidado!- grità ³.Careful! he shouted.-  ¿Cà ³mo ests? - Muy bien, gracias. How are you?Excellent, thank you.- Si quieres tener amigos- me decà a mi madre- , sà © un amigo. If you want to have friends, my mother told me, be a friend. In each of these cases, Spanish grammar dictates that the punctuation still belongs outside of the quotation signifier, except in the case that the sentence begins with a punctuation mark such as  ¡Cuidado! or  ¿Cà ³mo ests?.

PepsiCos Bid for Quaker Oats Example

PepsiCos Bid for Quaker Oats Example PepsiCo's Bid for Quaker Oats – Case Study Example PepsiCo’s Bid for Quaker Oats PepsiCo had been looking for a strategic acquisition ever since it’s restructuring. The restructuring exercise had ledto a dramatic rise in its margins on lower sales and employee strength. However, due to a sudden boom in information technology, the consumer products sector was not a hot favorite among the investors and therefore, PepsiCo’s executives thought it wise enough to wait for the right moment. The dotcom bubble burst in 2000 gave then this opportunity and Quaker Oats seemed to be the best fit in their long term acquisition strategy. PepsiCo was in a position to benefit significantly from the synergies to be achieved as a result of acquisition of Quaker Oats. Gatorade, one of the major products of Quaker, used warehouse brokers’ distribution system in contrast to PepsiCo’s Direct Store Delivery System. Both the systems were appropriate for their products. Through the acquisition, PepsiCo would be able to leverage Gatorade’s distribution system for its low volume products such as Tropicana. Moreover, benefits would be derived from economies of scale through common suppliers, production lines and capacity utilization. The acquisition would also enable PepsiCo to diversify its range of snacks. However, there were a few problems with the acquisition. PepsiCo only wanted a stock for stock transaction through pooling of interests, hence leaving no room for goodwill. As a result of this accounting method, PepsiCo would not be able to divest its assets in Quaker for 2 years. Another problem was that, PepsiCo would not be able to buy back its shares in large numbers. This cash distribution policy had been used extensively by PepsiCo and Quaker in the past to consolidate their assets. This acquisition, therefore, called for a sudden and big change in this policy. Another problem in the acquisition was that PepsiCo was more interested in Gatorade which constituted 40-45% of Quaker’s business while the other product lines such as food products may act as a liability for PepsiCo. Also, Quaker’s Price-Earnings ratio was lower than PepsiCo’s and an acquisition in the proposed manner could lead to erosion of PepsiCo’s earnings. There is no perfect solution to these problems but if PepsiCo sees considerable value in this acquisition, there is no harm in changing its cash distribution policy for the short term. Also since PepsiCo repurchased shares in the recent past. It may not be in urgent need to do the same for quite some time. The synergies gained as a result of this acquisition are sufficient to justify it. The company would gain significant cost savings as a result of Quaker’s distribution system, complementary product lines and health quotient of its products. These cost savings would more than offset the losses due to changes in cash distribution policy. Since, PepsiCo is interested only in Gatorade; it could also consider having talks to acquire only this part of Quaker’s business. However, this would require a completely different acquisition strategy as compared to stock for stock transaction. As far as Price-Earnings ratio is concerned, it is the best for Quaker among competitors. In other words, Quaker is the best possible acquisition target for PepsiCo at the moment. This may a lead to a short term dilution of its earnings and affect stock performance. The same should get compensated over the medium term. Owning a Electric Car - Essay Example Electric cars are the solution people have been waiting for years. The electric car marketplace is in the introductory stage of its product life cycle. Electric cars are a new product that is going to have a growing demand in the future. It is estimated that by the year 2020 hybrid and electric car sales will reach 6.6 million annual units which will account for 7% of the light-duty vehicle market (Marcacci, 2014). The government is helping companies to sell cars profitably by offering subsidies for the sale of green vehicles such as electric cars. The profitability for companies is going to increase once the demands rises because firms will be able to enjoy the benefits of economies of scale. Electric cars are the wave of the future. People are going to switch from gas to electricity because gas is going to continue to rise in price. A five dollar a gallon mark is closer than people realize. As electric cars go down in price more people are going to purchase more of these vehicles. One of the cons of some electric cars is their limited driving range. Car manufactures have to fire out a way that the range of the battery of electric cars match the range of a full tank of gas. Marcacci, S. (2014). Short and Long-Term Career Goals Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Short and Long-Term Career Goals - Essay Example Accounting has been my passion since I discovered what it was, and thus, as soon as I finished my Business Administration course and received my degree from Makerere University in 2005, I marched on to Nile Cargo Carrier Inc. to work as a junior accountant. During my tenure at NCCI, I witnessed firsthand its evolution and impact on society as it expanded, first nationally, and eventually internationally. Therefore, when I was leaving it after six years, I felt more than only sad; I felt that I was my attachment with the organization and its goals. I, now, shared its vision. In addition, thus, I took it upon myself to no longer be a mere employee of the company, but instead to establish a greater link and make more productive and active moves in its betterment. Therefore, I did. Moreover, all the while, I also founded Lusse Children’s Foundation and did some community service for my country. By 2013, as director of the organization, I have made it a personal goal to work toward s getting funds for food, shelter, and education project, and I believe to be a successful NGO, one needs to earn the trust of people, and there would be nothing better out there to prepare myself for the trust with a Northeastern degree. Everyone has a selfish side. My perspective is to establish, all the while expanding LCF, a financial consulting firm that aims to give advice to small or lower budgeted businesses. Furthermore, since I have mostly held friendly relationships with my teachers, I have become inspired to propagate MBA specialization courses, such as Financial Management and Business Turnarounds in my country. I believe that spreading knowledge and education will be a step in the positive direction for getting my country, and its slumping economy, out of distress. I realize that these goals are more than just slightly idealistic, but I firmly believe that enrollment in your reputable university will add some reality to my dreams. Describe in detail an accomplishment of yours from a professional or volunteer setting of which you are most proud. What steps were necessary to reach a successful conclusion? What challenges did you have to overcome? I have led a good life and I like to believe that today I am a strong man, both mentally and emotionally. However, I know better than anyone does that every bit of strength I have, I have earned it with hard work. Every challenge I have ever gotten past has been due to relentless determination and uphill struggle. Nothing has come easy to me. My undergraduate degree, especially, took its toll on me. I had to work very hard, but I believe the achievement I am pride myself in most would be the foundation of my non-governmental organization, the Lusse Children’s Foundation, an organization aimed to help children in Uganda, my home country. Starting an organization whose mission statement is to feed, educate, and protect is something everyone should do, but only a few people get the chance to. Starting this organization was not an easy task; I had to invest many of my personal savings to take things off. Furthermore, I had to spend a lot of time travelling overseas to coordinate with other partners and keep a check on the running of the c ompany. In fact, one of the most difficult things to do as a director was to keep a close watch on my colleagues to make sure they were not pocketing the funds and donations we had collected. This organization has been my source of pride for many reasons. Firstly, of course, it appeals to me altruistic side and makes me feel that I am contributing positively to my community and giving back to my home country what it needs most: resources. Having grown up in Uganda, I have seen the fundamental flaws that tarnish the beauty and innocence of that country and I can

Colombia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Colombia - Essay Example Colombia, a country in northern South America, borders the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and is situated between Panama and Venezuela. Encompassing more than one million square miles, Colombia is ranked currently as the 26th largest country in the world, slightly smaller than twice the size of Texas (Central Intelligence Agency, 2011). Its climate is tropical along its coasts and plains, but in the Andes Mountains it is slightly cooler, and it has a population of 44,725,543 people as of July 2011 (Central Intelligence Agency, 2011). Its government, overall, is a republic with elected officials, with a judicial system that has numerous national and district courts as well as a court of appeals, along with a House of Representatives and a Congress in its legislative branch and a duly-elected President in its executive branch. Colombia was originally colonized under Spanish rule. The Spanish sailed along the north coast of Colombia as early as 1500, but their first permanent settlement, at Santa Marta, was not made until 1525. In 1549, the area was established as a Spanish colony with the capital at Santa Fe de Bogota (Winslow). During the period before Spanish colonization, the area was inhabited by indigenous peoples who were primitive hunters or nomadic farmers, and out of the various Indian groups that were there, the area was dominated by The Chibchas, who lived in the region of present-day city of Bogotà ¡ (Winslow). Columbia actually had its first social movement in history in 1810, when on July 20th of that year the citizens of Bogota created the first representative council in defiance of Spanish authority and to attempt a try for their independence. Over the next three years, they fought for independence, which was proclaimed in 1813, and in 1819 the Republic of Greater Colombia was formed. Simo n Bolivar was elected its first president and Francisco de Paula Santander, vice president. However, just like any other movement, soon conflicts arose between the two leaders and their visions. From their views, two political parties grew and branched out, coming to dominate Colombian politics even today (Winslow). Bolivar managed only to keep authority until 1828, and then everything fell apart. In 1830, Venezuela and Ecuador became separate nations. Through the 19th century and into the 20th century, both political unrest and small, usually unremarkable social movements to combat the social unrest were popular. Strong parties developed along conservative and liberal lines; the conservatives favored centralism and participation by the church in government and education, and the liberals supported federalism, anticlericalism, and some measure of social legislation and fiscal reforms (Columbia Encyclopedia, 2007). The structure of Colombian society in the 1980s, which was always str ongly influenced by traditions inherited from sixteenth-century Spain, was highly stratified, having well-defined class membership, pronounced status differences, and limited vertical social mobility. The urban sector was characterized by a more flexible social system, a growing middle class, and greater participation of the population in national politics. Rural society in all but a few regions was organized in rigidly hierarchical structures in which change of status was very difficult. Only in the coffee-growing departments of Caldas and Antioquia were there sizable segments of the population exhibiting the traits of a rural middle class (Colombia: National Front). Various social movements existed in the 1960s and 1970s, and even well into the 1980s that eventually formed into armies. In 1964 the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group was born. It was followed by other groups, such as the National Liberation Army (ELN) on January 7, 1965, the Popular Libera tion Army (EPL) on July 1967, the Quintin Lame Movement (MAQL) in 1984 and the 19th of April Movement (M-19). (Colombia: National Front) Currently, there are still social movements in Colombia. Some groups make political statements their main
